Description:

Antioxidants are molecules that prevent the oxidation process, having the capacity to neutralize free radicals and to prevent the oxidation of “bad” cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol), thus preventing atherosclerosis and its complications.

Free radicals can be defined as atoms or molecules containing an unpaired electron in their structure. This configuration gives an unstable character to the molecules (or the atoms), that will develop a stabilization tendency, achieved by capturing or giving an electron to another molecule, which in turn, will become a free radical. In this way, it is generated a chain reaction that will disrupt enzymes and will create changes in the genetic material, resulting in the malignant transformation of cells.

From this perspective, antioxidants may be defined as molecules that are able to give or to receive the electrons of free radicals, which are neutralized. In this manner, the cascade effect of the oxidative processes is stopped.

Sources of free radicals:

Free radicals in the human body have both beneficial and harmful effects.

The main source of free radicals in the body is the mitochondria, the most important free radicals being: oxygen free radicals (singlet oxygen - 1O2, superoxide - O2-. hydroxyl - OH., alkoxy - RO., fenoxil - ARO., peroxyl - ROO.) and nitrogen (NO, NO2, NO3).

The free radicals produced in the body are involved in various physiological processes, such as the defense of the body against microbial attack (with its bactericidal action in the process of phagocytosis), the stimulation of cell growth and proliferation, the induction of apoptosis (apoptosis is the physiological death of cells, as a result of the mechanism of homeostasis maintenance).

Factors that may trigger the release of free radicals in the body are: ionizing and UV radiation, X-rays and microwaves, mobile phones, activating neutrophils, xanthine oxidase, electron transport chains in the mitochondria, etc. External sources of free radicals, such as chemical food additives, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, drugs, heavy metals, pesticides, along with predisposing factors, represent a real danger for the health of the body. The excess of free radicals having destructive effects that are directly proportional with the degree of pollution, radiation or poisoning with chemical substances coming from food colouring agents and preservatives, and other external sources.

The harmful effects of free radicals

Due to their instability, free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can cause: the destruction of cell membranes (by the oxidation of the lipids in their composition),'' bad'' LDL cholesterol oxidation (with the emergence of atherosclerosis and its complications), protein oxidation and genetic mutations at the level of the DNA, chromosomal aberrations, or they can change the composition of nitrogenous bases, causing breaks in the DNA strands, leading to the appearance of tumors, premature ageing and degenerative diseases.

Antioxidants serve to protect the body from oxidative stress (the imbalance between the oxidation and antioxidant capacity of the body). Endogenous antioxidants are enzymatic systems that play an antioxidant role, the most common endogenous antioxidants being: superoxide dismutaza (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase, etc.

Most times, these do not face the invasion of the body by free radicals coming from the external environment, so that an additional management of natural antioxidants that support the body in the fight for survival is required.

Antioxidant Plus is a combination of plants and seaweeds meant to ensure the maximum protection of the body against the destructive effect of free radicals and to relieve the disorders and dysfunctions generated by them, stopping the evolution of  the degenerative process.

Major actions: it stops the cascade effect of oxidative processes, it neutralizes free radicals, it prevents the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol and lipid composition of cell membranes, it increases the levels of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutaza, catalase and glutathione peroxidase), it prevents the evolution of degenerative processes and early ageing, it protects against the oxidative stress caused by environmental pollutants, it stimulates the synthesis of rhodopsin, it improves the visual acuity, it is antioxidant, capillary protector and vasoprotective, neuroprotective, antimutagenic, antitumoral.

Other actions: platelet anti-aggregatory, vasodilatory, diuretic, immunomodulatory.

Indications:

It is used as an adjunct in: oxidative stress, early ageing, degenerative eye diseases (macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy) and neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, stroke sequelae), atherosclerosis, chronic degenerative rheumatism, tumors, radiation exposure (therapeutic, accidental radiation, or radiation that is caused by phones, etc.), to counteract the effects of environmental pollutants, of food additives (colourings, sweeteners, preservatives, etc.), smoking, alcohol abuse and in geriatrics.

Contraindications: allergy to any of the product's ingredients.

Directions for Use:

Adults: take 1 tablet, 3 times a day, before meals.

Adolescents aged 15-18 years: take 1 tablet, 2 times a day, before meals.

Children under 14 years: as recommended by the doctor.

The tablets should be swallowed with water or crumbled in your mouth (the absorption of bioactive substances is much faster). In cases of difficulties in swallowing, the tablets can be broken in two.

Ingredients:

Plants and seaweeds: blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) - hydroalcoholic extract 8:1 (100 mg), grapes (Vitis vinifera) - hydroalcoholic extract with 95% proanthocyanidins (100 mg), spirulina (Spirulina platensis) - algae (100 mg), turmeric (Curcuma longa) - rhizomes (100 mg), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) - hydroalcoholic extract 8:1 (50 mg), sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) - hydroalcoholic extract 10:1 (50 mg), green tea (Camellia sinensis) - folium (50 mg), goji (Lycium barbarum) - hydroalcoholic extract with 40% polysaccharides (50 mg).

Inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, aerosil, magnesium stearate.

Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum)  is considered to be one of the most powerful sources of antioxidants due to its rich content in bioactive substances: phenolic compounds, antocianosides, dimers and trimers prodelphinidols, flavones and vitamin C, which have the ability to neutralize free radicals.

Other properties: capillary protector and vasoprotective, anti-platelet.

Grapes (Vitis vinifera). Grape seeds contain proanthocyanidins and resveratrol, bioactive compounds with strong antioxidant action, which prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, preventing atherosclerosis and its complications; it has a neuroprotective action, it slows the degenerative processes that occur in case of Alzheimer's disease and protects the body against premature ageing.

Spirulina (Spirulina platensis) is a blue-green algae, with a high content of bioactive substances that have a strong antioxidant action: phycocyanin (the pigment that gives colour to the algae), phenolic acids, β-carotene, vitamin E and selenium.

Recent research has shown that phycocyanin has the ability to neutralize free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation; also, spirulina increases the levels of glutathione and catalase and superoxide dismutase, playing an active role in reducing oxidative stress.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Originally from Southeast Asia and tropical Africa, turmeric is a plant that contains: curcuminoids (curcumin, demetoxicurcumin) and resveratrol, antioxidants that neutralize the peroxide and phenolic radicals, also, it inhibits the lipid peroxidation induced by chemical agents (from external sources). Recent studies have shown that turmeric may prevent DNA damage, giving the body the capacity to protect itself against neurodegenerative diseases.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) fruits have a composition that is rich in bioactive substances, with a strong antioxidant action, capillary protector and vasoprotective, platelet antiaggregatory: antocianosides (myrtilloides A and B), flavones (hyperoside and quercitroside) procianidols and resveratrol. Blueberry fruits stimulate the synthesis of rhodopsin, improve blood flow and irrigate the eye and they can be administered as an adjunct both against degenerative eye diseases (glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration) and to adapt to night vision light, increasing visual acuity.

Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has a composition that is rich in powerful antioxidant substances, that are involved in neutralizing free radicals: vitamins (C, E, PP), carotenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids and trans-resveratrol.

Recent studies have shown that carotenoids are the strongest biological substances that link to singlet radical oxygen. According to the research conducted, cis isomers of carotenoids have the ability to interrupt the radical chain reactions, thereby stopping the cascade effect of oxidative processes.

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) Originally from China, green tea has been known and used for over 5000 years. Green tea leaves have a high content in: polyphenolic acids (caffeic and chlorogenic acid), gallic, catehic and mixed tannins, polyphenols with a tropolonic structure, flavonoids and proantocianidols, bioactive substances that neutralize oxygen free radicals (superoxide, peroxyl, hydroxyl and peroxynitrite), inhibit lipid peroxidation, reduce oxidative stress, presenting antimutagenic and antitumoral action.

Goji (Lycium barbarum)  is a tree originating in the Himalayas, that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for about 2,000 years. The following bioactive substances have been identified in the composition of the plant: vitamins (A, C and E), carotenoids and polysaccharides. Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate at the level of the macula (the central area of the retina that mediates central vision), helping to prevent degenerative eye diseases.

Recent research has shown that goji berries prevent LDL- cholesterol peroxidation and effectively neutralize superoxide and peroxyl radicals, also increasing the levels of superoxide dismutaza (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase enzymes.
